Amongst the green sprawl of the Jose Ignacio countryside, this Spanish-import to the Uruguayan luxury market offers a gentrified retreat with extensive art collection and bourgeoisie fantasy that make it one of the great South American resorts. It's owners operate a collection of small and medium-size hotels in the Canary Islands and Dominican Republic, but this is by far their best and most-personal hotel to date.
Estancia Vik Jose Ignacio sits on 4,000 acres in Laguna Jose Ignacio, 20km northeast of Punta del Este. The main hotel complex is an impressive sight, a Spanish Colonial structure of white adobe walls and red tin roofs with covered walkways linking multiple outdoor courtyards and idyllic gardens designed by Marcelo Daglio. Dramatic indoor spaces, comprising over 50,000 square foot, feature sweeping patios with outdoor seating areas decorated in B&B Italia amongst sculptural installations and large formal gardens.
The south side of the Estancia boasts a large grassy polo fiel and 20-meter pool made of stone illuminated with fiber optic lights by night. A brick barreled dining room serves barbeque, fresh fish and seafood, locally grown fruits and vegetables and homemade breads and pastries.
The Room
Until the Setai debuts in 2011, this is the bed to book whilst in Jose Ignacio. The Estancia’s 12 guest rooms are modestly sized but decadent on details, separated into two private wings. Of the six suites in each wing, there are four 500 square foot Suites on the ground level and two 900 square foot Master Suites on the second floor. All twelve private Suites have a unique design with original art conceived for each space by leading contemporary Uruguayan artists. Suites feature full bathrooms with separate bathtubs and rain showers. Each suite also has a full built-in closet, and private access to the exterior patios surrounding the Estancia. Master Suites offer the same facilities as Suites but also including outdoor showers on the patio. Each Master Suite has a walk-in closet and private access to the exterior patios.
